TRAVERSING THE LANDSCAPE

OPENING EVENT: 6.00PM THURSDAY 23 OCTOBER

@14 GALLERY, 14 LANGRIDGE STREET, COLLINGWOOD VIC 3066

Traversing the Landscape invites you into the quiet yet expansive world of Graham McKenzie’s practice. This special retrospective exhibition draws together a selection of works from McKenzie’s archives, offering a rare opportunity to acquire pieces that trace his lifelong dialogue with place.

Filling countless sketchbooks across his life, McKenzie captured landscapes with an intimacy that speaks to his enduring curiosity and care. Each work in this exhibition belongs to a broader series — rooted in a time and place, yet possessing a timeless quality.

Often, McKenzie would return to the same site again and again, painting it through shifting seasons, years, and ever-changing light. His works are layered with this quiet observation: a noticing of subtle change and an honouring of continuity in the landscape.

Outside his own practice as an artist, McKenzie was a dedicated teacher, sharing his deep knowledge with generations of students. His interest extended beyond the act of painting into the history and philosophy of art itself. He believed in understanding the lineage of ideas, movements, and techniques that shapes visual language.

Through Traversing the Landscape, we celebrate not only McKenzie’s profound connection to the Australian landscape, memory, and painting, but also his legacy as a thinker and teacher who saw art as both an intellectual inquiry and a skilled craft.

“I am not painting a canvas that directly copies the beauty I am experiencing but rather I want it to challenge each viewer to seek out their own understanding of beauty from the memories they carry."
