Traversing the Landscape

In October 2025, family, friends, collectors, and admirers gathered at @14 Gallery, Collingwood for Traversing the Landscape, a special exhibition celebrating the life and work of late Australian artist Graham McKenzie.
Bringing together paintings from a number of significant series, the exhibition reflected Graham's lifelong engagement with the Australian landscape. Returning to places repeatedly over many years, he developed a body of work distinguished by careful observation and an enduring sensitivity to the subtle shifts of season, light, and time.
Alongside his work as an artist, Graham was also a respected teacher and passionate advocate for the study of art. His belief in painting as both an intellectual inquiry and a skilled craft influenced generations of students and artists. Traversing the Landscape honoured not only his remarkable artistic practice, but also his lasting legacy as a thinker, mentor, and educator.
Graham McKenzie was a Melbourne-based landscape painter and teacher.
Over the course of his career, McKenzie travelled extensively across Australia, including to many remote communities in the north, as well as regional and local destinations. His paintings from these journeys reflect his deep appreciation for the diverse landscapes he encountered. Rather than creating direct representations, McKenzie’s works offer personal and emotive interpretations of place, inviting viewers to engage with the beauty and atmosphere of the landscapes he depicted.
